Disney films always seem to have a brutal element, like a parent dying or some kind of adversity.

So they’ve done a complete volte face with Maleficent, as in the original Sleeping Beauty, she is evil personified.

Angelina Jolie’s take on the character however, gives her a very compassionate side, despite all her attempts to be nasty, her love for Aurora blunts the edges of her nastiness.

Sumptuously filmed, the special effects are enchanting and scary in good measure.

It must have been a huge undertaking to come up with the special effects for the forest kingdom, but the fairy like quality is spectacular.

Elle Fanning is sweet as Aurora, but the film is commanded by Angelina Jolie, you can’t take your eyes off her when’s she’s on screen and she shows subtle tinges of humour, as well as the darker side of her character.

She is particularly touching in a scene with toddler Aurora, played by her own daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, it must have been difficult for her to try to portray being uncaring with her own child, but the love still shines through.

A strong supporting cast also makes for a great film, Imelda Staunton, always good value, is hilarious in her role as Knotgrass, and Sam Riley as Diaval also gives the film some lighter moments.

The only character I did not really like was Stefan played by Sharlto Copley. The accent was distracting, and you had no sense of empathy whatsoever with the character. He did not come across as very convincing, and weakened the story.

My six year old daughter loves this film, it only came out on DVD yesterday, and we’ve already watched it three times! You cannot ask for anything more from a children’s film really.

Maleficent 8/10. Rated PG.
