Blacklist

The Blacklist, Gogglebox and Scott & Bailey are some of the best shows on TV at the moment.

Here’s why:

The Blacklist
The Blacklist

1. The Blacklist (Sky Living, Fridays, 9pm): Starring James Spader as Raymond ‘Ray’ Reddington, one of the FBI’s most wanted fugutives. In the first episode of Season One, he turns himself in and offers to help the FBI  track down some of the most notorious criminals if he gets to work with rookie profiler Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone). Now, in its second series, the action is fast paced and not for the faint-hearted.  Spader is tremendous in his role as Red, a man with so many layers, you never seem to be able to get to the bottom of his character.

2. Scott & Bailey (ITV1; Wednesdays; 9pm): One of the best British drama detective series’ on the box. Starring Suranne Jones as Rachel Bailey and Lesley Sharp as Janet Scott, it also stars the fabulous Amelia Bullmore as their belligerent boss Gill Murray.  These women run rings around their male colleagues, and I wouldn’t like to be cross-examined by Janet, she could get anything out of me! Both have equally hopeless love lives as the vast majority of their lives are spent chasing criminals, but the acting is top notch.

3. Gogglebox: (Channel 4, Fridays, 9pm:  On paper, this programme should never have worked. A bunch of different families being filmed in their homes watching TV and reacting to what they see on screen. But they have been very clever in the people they have chosen,  and ironically they are now famous themselves. My favourites are Leon and June Bernicoff, Stephanie and Dom Parker and Christopher Steed and Stephen Webb. Currently, one of the most talked about shows on the box.
