Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon, Hywel Williams is calling on HSBC bosses to revert their decision to axe the only cash point on Llanberis high street, as the bank sets to close its doors to the public in August.

Local residents and community leaders have blasted HSBC for closing the only remaining bank in Llanberis. Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams has now started a petition calling on the bank to step in & save the only cash point on the high street from closure.

Hywel Williams MP said: “Not only will the people of Llanberis have to deal with losing the only bank in the village, but they will also be stripped of one of only two cash machines in the village.

“Llanberis is a bustling village, which relies heavily on tourism during the summer months. Taking away one of only two cash machines will make things harder for both local people and visitors.

“We are continually told that more and more people are choosing online banking. But bank bosses should also bear in mind that not everybody has internet access and many people, particularly the elderly, like to bank with people they’ve come to know and trust.

“I’m calling on HSBC bosses to look again at this misguided decision & listen to the overwhelming public opinion that this vital local service should be safeguarded.”

Gwilym Evans of Llanberis Community Council said: “Llanberis is a thriving community with a lively town centre and an increasing number of visitors. I feel this is a short-sighted measure by HSBC which is likely to lose them a lot of customers.  The people who make these decisions need to think about the impact of their actions on the community they serve. Llanberis Community Council are fully behind this campaign to save both the bank and cash point from closure.”
