S4C will celebrate the best of Welsh music in the company of some of Wales’ biggest stars with a special concert filmed at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on St David’s Day.

Emma Walford presents Bryn Terfel: Cyngerdd Gŵyl Ddewi on Sunday evening, March 8, on S4C. So reach for the Welsh cakes and enjoy an evening packed with a variety of music which celebrates the nation’s talents.

Joining the world-famous bass-baritone are soprano Menna Cazel and Royal Harpist Hannah Stone. Conducted by Gareth Jones, the BBC Wales National Orchestra and Chorus and the National Youth Choir of Wales also perform.

The programme will be a celebration of Wales’ varied music and includes vocal and choral pieces, as well as orchestral and instrumental performances. The music combines popular and classical pieces by a wide range of Welsh composers.

Bryn Terfel is one of the world’s most famous opera singers, and is set to star in the West End production of Sweeney Todd with actress Emma Thompson among others.

Bryn Terfel said:  “It’s always an honour and a pleasure to sing in St David’s Hall and especially so on St David’s Day. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the nation’s immense musical talent and our Welsh identity at the same time.”

Elen Rhys, S4C’s new Content Commissioner, Entertainment says, “What better way of celebrating the arrival of spring than with S4C’s feast of musical programming? Bryn Terfel: Cyngerdd Gŵyl Ddewi will be a night to remember, and with Cân i Gymru and Côr Cymru also being broadcast in March, there’s more than enough to remind us that we truly are the land of song in the company of our nation’s talented musicians and performers.”

Bryn Terfel: Cyngerdd Gŵyl Ddewi will be shown on Sunday, March 8,  at 7.30pm on S4C.
