The National Eisteddfod’s Theatr y Maes will be transformed into a make-shift production studio this Thursday night (4 Aug) for a very special piece of theatre.

Frân Wen theatre company will create a new piece of theatre in one evening with a crew of Wales’ most prominent artists, with a performance set for the Eisteddfod theatre stage at 12pm on the Friday (5 August).

The Theatr Unnos (Overnight Theatre) artists are Eddie Ladd, Iwan Fôn, Mirain Fflur, Gruff Ab Arwel, Nico Dafydd, Iola Ynyr and Gwennan Mair Jones.

“To help inspire the artists, we’re encouraging all visitors to the National Eisteddfod to post their ideas through the letterbox of the bright yellow door in the Pentref Drama’s (theatre zone) dedicated cafe,” said Iola Ynyr, Frân Wen’s artistic director.

“The theme/subject will be pulled out of the hat at 5:30pm on the Thursday evening at Caffi’r Theatrau (Theatre Cafe).

“The aim is to create a piece of theatre in less than 20 hours that’ll push the boundaries, be challenging perhaps, but above all will be relevant to the audience.

“We’d like to thank the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru for being ready to venture into the unknown with Theatr Unnos, and to BBC Radio Cymru for their support because the concept stems from the success of their Sesiwn Unnos music recording sessions.

“We have a superb mix of artists – from contemporary choreographer Eddie Ladd performer Iwan Fon, who is fast making a name for himself on the Welsh stages, to the experimental composer Gruff ab Arwel and visual artist Mirain Flur.

“As a team we can’t wait to react theatrically to what to public give us – and to create a really exciting piece of theatre,” added Iola.

You can follow Theatr Unnos all day and night through Twitter and Instagram (#TheatrUnnos), Facebook and the stage performance will be broadcast live on Periscope.
