School pupils from the Arfon area’s school recently showed off their prowess in two exciting swimming galas.

Swimming galas for pupils in years 3 to 6 from the area’s primary schools were held at the Arfon Leisure Centre, Caernarfon. This year’s events included a special guest with swimmer Mari Davies who swam in the commonwealth games in Glasgow and more recently in the youth games in Samoa, presenting the winning teams with their shields.

The pupils put on a fantastic effort, but Ysgol Bro Llifon were victorious in the category for schools with fewer than 70 children, with Ysgol Rhostryfan taking the second prize and Ysgol Santes Helen, Caernarfon coming in third. A total of six schools were competing on the day.

Councillor Mair Rowlands, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy Gwynedd stated: “Swimming is a great way to improve children’s confidence and awareness as well as helping them to get active and participate in exercise. Congratulations to all the children who took part and it’s great to see so many of them actively participating and enjoying healthy living. A thank you also goes to all the staff that helped to make this event possible.”

The schools with more than 70 pupils also gave a great show with eight schools competing. Ysgol Llanrug won the gala with Ysgol Felinheli taking second place and Ysgol Bontnewydd in third.

Dyfed Glyn Davies, Gwynedd Council’s Aquatic Development Officer said: “We had two fantastic days in the swimming gala with many primary school pupils from the Arfon area enjoying the competition and the opportunity to represent their schools. It was nice to see high quality swimming from the children, and more importantly, everybody seemed to have a good time.”

Guto Williams, Arfon and Nantlle leisure centres’ Area Manager for Gwynedd Council noted: “Many congratulations to Ysgol Bro Llifon and Ysgol Llanrug for their success, thanks to every school that competed and for supporting the centre throughout the year. I would like to thank all the staff at the Arfon Leisure Centre for their work during the two days and to the Sport Development team for their help with the Gala.”
