Rhydian Roberts as The Dentist in Little Shop of Horror – Venue Cymru North Wales

Ringing any bells yet? These are some of the infamous lines from the song Grow For Me, in the black comedy musical Little Shop of Horrors.

Tonight was the opening night at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, and a packed audience were enthralled by the antics of the insatiable man eating plant Audrey II and the superb cast of Little Shop of Horrors.

Apart from the puppetry, which was fantastic, the voices of the cast were also outstanding, from the ensemble to the main parts.

Rhydian Roberts of X-Factor fame, played the part of dentist Orin Scrivello as well as some smaller roles and he truly has an unforgettable voice, so powerful and strong. The character is not likeable at all, he has sado-masichistic tendencies, but fair play to Rhydian, who may be quite new to the acting game, he showed he has great comedic timing as well as being a belter of a singer.

Sam Lupton who played the role of nerdy Seymour, also has a really striking singing voice and his innocence and desperation at having to find bodies to feed Audrey II were well played.

Stephanie Clift, as the tart with a heart Audrey, was also outstanding, her rendition of Somewhere That’s Green was emotional and touching, wrenching at the heart strings.

There were a few minor sound issues but as it was the first night, errors can crop in, and they didn’t detract from the show too badly.

Little Shop of Horrors can be seen at Venue Cymru until August 20. Go along and be entertained, my partner who hates musicals, loved it.

At the end of the night, my daughter asked me if we could have a plant like Audrey II, but I said no, I think I would be too tempting a snack for it!
