2019 marks a milestone in the history of The Quilt Association as it is 25 years since the very first major summer exhibition of antique quilts in Llanidloes.
This year’s exhibition, Silver Threads, will feature a diverse selection of quilts from the association’s own collection, some of which were made locally and donated by local families or those with connections to the area.
The exhibition opens at the association’s base, Minerva Arts Centre, on Saturday, August 3 and runs until September 7. Open from Monday to Saturday, between 10.30 and 4.30, admission is free.
Also on show will be small, contemporary pieces inspired by those on display and made by the Turning Point Art Textiles group and the association’s trustees. In addition, there will be a display of quilts by contemporary art textiles group Tangent Textiles.
The association, a registered charity, is managed by a small group of volunteer trustees who conserve, add to and document the Welsh Heritage Quilt Collection of antique and vintage quilts.
Workshops on quilting and associated textile arts are run with visiting tutors, some of whom are internationally known experts.
Chris Shercliff, an association trustee, said: “Our summer exhibitions attract visitors from all over the UK and beyond. Silver Threads will be very special.
“We want to show the variety of quilts we have in the collection which has been built up over the last 25 years. The different fabrics, fillings, techniques and stitching patterns used truly do make each quilt unique.”

Notes for editors:
The Quilt Association (QA) is a registered charity based at the Minerva Arts Centre in Llanidloes. The QA is managed by a small group of volunteer trustees who conserve, add to and document the Welsh Heritage Quilt Collection of antique and vintage quilts. We receive no outside funding and so, when we are not exhibiting our quilts, our income is derived from the hire of the building to outside groups. We also run workshops on quilting and associated textile arts with visiting tutors, some of whom are internationally known experts. The collection is available for study and research on application to the trustees. For more information please contact us or see our website www.quilt.org.uk
