The Sandman Triathlon powered by Suunto was met with excitement and anticipation by over 1,000 triathletes who descended on Newborough Forest, Anglesey to take part in the full distance triathlon that lived up to it’s billing as the “UK’s no.1 triathlon location”.

The triathletes were treated to breathtaking views of Llanddwyn beach, the Snowdonia Mountain range and the Llyn Peninsula as they  prepared for their epic triathlon race!

SATURDAY

Opening the Sandman weekend on Saturday was the Sprint race. The top 3 became a family affair with Pete and Andy Dyson taking first and second respectively, third place was taken by Paul Savage less than a minute later.

The women’s race featured some familiar faces, with GOG Triathlon’s Rhian Roxburgh taking first place ahead of Adventure Triathlon Sprint Series winner Helen Talbot. Rebecca Linekar rounded off the top 3.

SUNDAY

Taking place on Sunday, the main event was the Full distance Sandman. This closely fought race was won by Brian Fogarty who made up for a slow swim with a storming bike section to lead comfortably from Tom Higgins, who finished in second place with Lewis Eccleston finishing in third place.

In the women’s race, Manchester Triathlon’s Rachel Hall crossed the line in the first place ahead of Becky Schofield to take first place with eventual Savage and Sprint Tri Series winner Helen Talbot appearing on the podium again in third.

Taking place across the two day event was the Sandman Weekender, competitors in this took part in both the Sprint and the Full distance races. In the men’s discipline, Paul Savage emerged victorious with a cumulative time of 03.51.49. In the women’s race, Helen Talbot rounded off a very successful weekend in Newborough by taking first place with a time of 04.14.54.

And thanks of course, to all the competitors who took part over the sunny two days.”

“We would like to thank Anglesey County Council and our partners; Suunto, High5 Sports Nutrition, Pedal Cover, Salomon, AquaSphere and Superfeet.”
