Artist Sarah Younan is creating a ‘Museum of Dust’ to celebrate the end of her residency at the historic Tabernacle Chapel in Llandudno this Sunday. For the past 20 days, Sarah has been cleaning the chapel in a challenging routine, which has seen her rising at 4.30am and cleaning until 8.30pm. The artist has transformed the space through ritual, and she’s created handmade soap and beeswax for polishing the building meticulously alone.
Sarah found her inspiration to clean after discovering the Grade 2 listed Chapel’s unique baptism pool. The idea of cleansing the soul started Sarah thinking about cleaning the building, which had been empty for several years.
Cardiff-based artist Sarah says, “I have spent my time in the building alone, cleaning to ‘free the building and myself’.”
During the process of cleaning, Sarah has unearthed and collected dust and detritus from the chapel. She has used these materials to create artworks for the ‘Museum of Dust’, which will be exhibited in the vestry during the final exhibition this Sunday.
Sabine Cockrill, Director at Culture Action Llandudno (CALL CIC), says:
“CALL CIC has been set up to explore the regeneration of Llandudno’s forgotten buildings or ‘Lost Spaces’. Sarah has gently changed the environment of the chapel by restoring it back to its former glory through cleaning it .The space looks and smells so much more loved. The project, part of the Tabernacle Residencies or TABLAB (Tabernacle Laboratory), gives artists the time and space to explore buildings and think about a space, its place in the community of Llandudno and its potential for regeneration.”
This project has been made possible by the collaborative initiative and financial support of the Arts Council Wales Ideas:People:Places grant and Mostyn Estates Ltd.
The final event will also feature an ‘in conversation’ session with TABLAB Curator Marc Rees, a new film showing Sarah’s cleaning made by local filmmaker Matt Sydall, and an original baptism dress that is on loan from Llandudno Museum.
